Ayrshire Occupational Health & Safety Group

Is your company ready to meet the Health & Safety challenge of the 21st century. Can industry continue with the accident and fatality rate that we have?  Will corporate manslaughter become law?

Is it acceptable for people to go to work and not return due to an accident at work?  Should work destroy people's health and well being?  The Ayrshire Occupational Health & Safety Group says NO!

We as a group strive to deliver and disseminate legislation, advise on compliance and advise on what Health & Safety Executive Guidance is available to businesses, provide guest speakers who are qualified in their field of presentation and share members experience with various problems and solutions.

Formed almost forty years ago, the Group has seen many changes in industries within Ayrshire with the loss of mining, heavy engineering and textiles.   As the industrial situation changes to computer manufacturing, retail, catering, public services, tourism, finance and customer support, the aim of the Ayrshire Group remains constant – to provide quality information, advice and support to our members.

What is the cost of such a service? – well in 1988 the subscription was set at what was considered as “affordable” to industry. Today, such a service would be well into a three-figure sum, but thanks to the efforts of past committees and members, the subscription is only £60 per annum and will remain £60 for the foreseeable future, thanks to the work of the present committee. What in real terms does your business receive on joining?

An annual programme of 10 seminars with a typical years programme being from Stress, Hand/Arm Vibration, Contingency Plans in the event of a major incident, Risk Assessment, Environmental Issues to Control of contractors and current legislative issues.  Members are also encouraged to put forward their own suggestions for subjects to be included in the annual programme.

Members Training Day which may include any or all of the above subjects and a visit to a particular industry to see how they function in real time.  This gives the opportunity to meet other in the field of safety and discuss / share like problems and their possible solutions.

 Advice on H.S.E. publications available.

An excellent Christmas Lunch often with a celebrity guest speaker………………and the opportunity to build friendships, to discuss thoughts and ideas with other members of the Group.

All of this is included in your £60 membership fee.

The Ayrshire Group has over recent years been very active, with a high level of attendance at Group meetings.   As a result of the friendships built up between members, our meetings have become an informal source of help and advice for us all.
